Win a copy of the novel Johannes Cabal The Detective by Jonathon L. Howard.  Thanks to our friends at Random House for donating these prizes for our faithful listeners.  The novel descrption is as follows:

Johannes Cabal, necromancer of some little infamy, returns in this riotously clever and terrifically twisted tale of murder and international intrigue.

In this genre-twisting novel, infamous necromancer Johannes Cabal, after beating the Devil and being reunited with his soul, leads us on another raucous journey in a little-known corner of the world. This time he’s on the run from the local government.

Stealing the identity of a minor bureaucrat, Cabal takes passage on the Princess Hortense, a passenger aeroship that is leaving the country. The deception seems perfect, and Cabal looks forward to a quiet trip and a clean escape, until he comes face-to-face with Leonie Barrow, an enemy from the old days who could blow his cover. But when a fellow passenger throws himself to his death, or at least that is how it appears, Cabal begins to investigate out of curiosity. His minor efforts result in a vicious attempt on his own  life—and then the gloves come off.

Cabal and Leonie—the only woman to ever match wits with him—reluctantly team up to discover the murderer. Before they are done, there will be more narrow escapes, involving sword fighting and newfangled flying machines. There will be massive destruction, not to mention resurrected dead . . .

Steampunk meets the classic Sherlockian mystery in this rip-roaring adventure where anything could happen . . . and does.

It’s easy to enter the contest.  Just send your name and address to contest@drunkenzombie.com and we’ll be picking 3 winners on or about July 31st.  And if you can’t wait to see if you won head on over to the Official Random House website and pick yourself up a copy.

FACT:

Abraham Lincoln was one of the most gifted vampire hunters of his day, and kept a secret journal about his lifelong war against them.

This simple fact kicks off one of the most interesting books I have read this year.  Seth Grahame-Smith has put a new twist on the biography of Honest Abe, detailing his lifelong battle against a bloodthirsty legion of the undead.

The book starts out with Lincoln witnessing the deaths of most of his family by a vampire named Jack Barts.  An enraged Abe vows at this point to kill every vampire in America.  Fearless and headstrong, Abe sets off to begin his task.  He tracks a vampire to Evansville, and attacks it.  He is quickly outmatched, however, and lies near death.  At this point, he is rescued by Henry Sturges, who also happens to be a vampire.  Henry, however, becomes sympathetic to Abe’s cause, and offers to help him on his quest to rid America of the undead.

What follows is an extremely fast-paced and enjoyable story.  The addition of vampires to the story works very well, and does not feel like it has been tacked on to make a quick buck.  I especially like the fact that vampires migrated to America because the slave population provided them with a near infinite supply of food.  This was a very clever idea on Mr. Grahame-Smith’s part.

Fans of David McCullough’s style of writing will feel right at home with this book.  It keenly mixes Lincoln’s journal entries into the narrative, providing a first person perspective of his lifelong battle with the vampires.  These passages are extremely well written, and do a great job of keeping your eyes glued to the page.   Overall, I would definitely recommend this book.  Its well written, has terrific pacing, and is brings new life to the story of Honest Abe.

In this wacky comic from 2007 The Crypt Keeper, The Old Witch & The Vault Keeper will treat you to three tales of horror. But I’m going to talk about my favorite story in this comic called The Tenant, a rich man named James Winchell who owns apartment building all around town has been getting complaints from his tenants that the building needs maintenance because the Winter season has just rolled in & the building doesn’t have heat to keep people warm. But James has better things to do then get his hands dirty. Later we find out that a old lady died in one of James buildings because the lack of heat & that’s when everything starts going down hill for James Winchell. A trail date has been sat & James was found guilty & his punishment is that James now has to stay in one of his old rundown buildings next to a cemetery. What happens next…? You’ll just have to pick up this comic & find out.

I find this comic really fun to read & having The Crypt Keeper making jokes & one liners all through out the book made me laugh, on the other hand sometimes the other stories don’t hold up as good & the art is hit & miss, more then one artist draws for this comic. Overall I enjoyed reading Tales from the Crypt #2 & it made me want to pick up other comics in this series.

Word is making rounds that Tim Burton is working on an adaptation of Alice In Wonderland.  I think that had been announced before but when finding out one thing pops into my head.  What Took So Long?  I mean the two were basically made for each other.  Seeing Burton’s take on Wonderland is going to be great.  Well at least one person has been cast.  His sometimes partner in crime Johnny Depp has been cast as The Mad Hatter.  I love Depp and think he’ll do his usual great job.  Depp aparently has also signed on for a 4th Pirates (meh) and is signed on to play Tonto in the Lone Ranger Movie.  I don’t quite understand the last one but I’m sure if I was making a movie and had a chance for Depp to be in it I would take it to.
