I have long believed that there are two truths in life.  First, that mainstream Hollywood has run out original ideas.  To see anything new and interesting you have to go to independent films or overseas.  And second, the only thing worse than an undead flesh eating Zombie is a undead flesh eating Nazi Zombie!

With that in mind, it is my pleasure to recommend the Norwegian film Dead Snow.

The film begins with eight young medical school students heading into the woods to enjoy a weekend of snow mobiling, friendship, and hedonistic pleasures.  However, the vacation is interrupted by the required ominous, creepy local bad guy who warns of a bleak time during WWII when the locals were dominated by a sadistic Nazi colonel and his equally cruel platoon.  As the Russians approached and the end seemed near, the Nazis took what treasures were left from the town and took refuge in the surrounding mountains.  Their ill gotten booty was lost, however, and they roam the mountains to this day looking for their undead retirement fund.

What transpires next can only be described as a fun ride and a fresh take on many of the classic Romero-esk Zombie moments.  There is the usual “tearing-apart-a-victim-while-friends-look-on” scene.  However this one is done from the victims point of view.  This scene alone leaves you with both a very creepy feeling an a feeling of “freaken sweet!!”.   This film has great comedic moments while still treating the subject of the film with reverence.

With a great final battle scene and a great ending this film will not disappoint.  In a genera that has seen amazing failures in recent years (Diary of the Dead), I would say this movie is a must see.

Pluses include a strong gore to dialogue ratio, good effects and makeup,  good soundtrack, and fast paced.

Minus are that there is almost non-existent boobage (to be fair it is set in the middle of a Norwegian winter) and a few plot holes.

I’d rate this a very strong 4/5.

Not a lot new to look at but here’s a couple quick trailers to watch if you’re interested in horror from over the seas.

Tokyo Gore Police

If you liked Machinegirl you should definitely be giving this film a look.  It’s going to coin new terms for horror fans every where, like “crocodile-vagina.”  With this new poster also comes a new NOT SAFE FOR WORK trailer that you can check out here.

Last of the Living

This Australian films answers the burning question, ‘what would I am Legend have been like if Will Smith has been jock and his nerd pal and the film was set in Australia?’  I know I was certainly wondering about that, weren’t you?  Anyway, it looks like just another zombie film and there are plenty to pick from these days so you can decide if you want to see it by taking a look at the trailer:

Dorothy

A couple weeks ago I posted the french dubbed version of this trailer and now it’s back in english with french subtitles and I gotta say understanding what they’re actually saying makes the film so much creepier.  This seems to be in the vein of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, with a psychologist investigating a case of Multiple personality disorder that may actually be demonic possession.  Give it a look and see what you think.

As always head over to the forums if you want to discuss any of these films.  Thanks to twitchfilm.net for the Tokyo Gore Police trailer.

If it’s monday, it’s time for me to post more trailers for foreign horror films.

S.S.D.

First up is this Russian slasher film.  It deals with a slasher murdering members of a Reality TV show.  If you visit the actual youtube page there’s subtitles included, which makes it a little easier to understand what’s being said.

Nightmare Detective 2

From Japan we have the sequel to Nightmare Detective, a film about a man able to enter other peoples dreams.  The first film was surprisingly intense and this one looks like more of the same.  It’s subtitled too so you won’t be entirely left scratching your head wondering what’s going on.

Mutant Chronicles

This film seems to have been floating around forever because of the fundraising trailer that was leaked to the web several years ago.  Well, it’s finally finished and on it’s way to theaters with Thomas Jane in the lead and co-starring Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman.  Personally, I wasn’t at all impressed by the footage I’ve seen but take a look at the trailer and see if you’ll be interested.

Sauna

If Death Bed: The Bed that eats people didn’t prove that you can make a horror film about anything this Finnish film certainly does.  Did you ever expect to see a horror film called Sauna?  Not even Death Sauna, just Sauna.  Well, don’t let the title scare you away.  This trailer makes the film look beautiful and is filled with a lot of blood.

Mum & Dad

If you think your family is bad well this trailer will certainly put that in perspective.  This British horror film deals with a young woman who’s kidnapped and forced to become part of brutal, abusive family.
